Pumpkin seeds have been starting to make their way into people’s diets slowly but surely. These tasty seeds can be prepared in a variety of ways: raw, roasted, salted, or ground. Another great thing about pumpkin seeds? They have amazing benefits for your Dog too!

Why are pumpkin seeds so great? These easy to find delicacies are packed with nutrients and benefits for your furry companions:

•    They are a natural remedy for intestinal parasites. Pumpkin seeds are natural deworming agents. They are most effective against tapeworms and roundworms.

•    Rich in antioxidants and fatty acids, they do a good job in preventing urinary tract infections, easing the passing of kidney stones, and enhancing overall urinary health.

•    Due to the high amount of Omega-3 in them, pumpkin seeds are anti-inflammatory agents for both older and growing dogs.

•    They are a good source of monosaturated and polysaturated fats, which help in the promotion of “good” or low-density cholesterol.

•    Rich in vitamins E and K: Vitamin E is vital for the lowering of blood pressure and the protection from harmful free radicals while vitamin K promotes growth, skin healing, and the formation of blood clots on damaged tissue.

•    Mineral mania: the seeds contain potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron, phosphorous, copper, and manganese.

Here are a few tips on dosages and preparation of the seeds:

•    Dosage: the recommendation is a quarter teaspoon of seeds per 5kg of body weight.

•    Only feed your dog organic pumpkin seeds, in order to reap all of their glorious benefits. If your dog doesn't enjoy them as a treat, you can grind them and add to his meal.

•    Make sure to never salt the seeds, and although raw shelf time is not that long, it is better to feed your dog raw seeds (they can also be roasted but not salted).

•    Be mindful of any expiration dates as the seeds become toxic if ingested when they spoil.

•    Anything in excess is harmful to your dog’s health, so always start with a small amount and gradually increase to the full dosage.
